Diversity and Equity

Together, we can bring change for an association that increasingly reflects our society. Our members makeup mirrors our society’s demographics. Our library users come from different ethnic groups, LGBT populations, socioeconomic background and disabilities, reflecting our increasingly diverse society.

I bring my leadership and experience with diverse groups. I am proud to have lead the development of a Leadership Video Series part of ALA's Presidential Initiative, Empowering Diverse Voices. In 2005, established the annual Joint REFORMA Northeast Mini Conference with ALA ethnic caucus. As an active member of the ethnic caucus, I collaborate with teams to develop programs and initiatives for the members.

I have been inspired to build on the work of the Office for Diversity and the Spectrum Program, Literacy and Outreach Services and the ALA Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

  • Lines of Action: We must continue striving to facilitate mechanisms for more joint work among ALA units and with different stakeholders to promote diversity and equity in our profession and association.
  • Together we can strengthen efforts to embed diversity and equity principles in our association’s programs and services which in turn could impact our profession at large and services provided by libraries nationwide. Stay tuned for more.
